Resisting industrial timber plantations
GeaSphere is a small environmental organization based in Mpumalanga, South Africa. In their current project, GeaSphere is looking into the history of industrial timber plantations in the region of Mpumalanga, South Africa, the primary water catchment area for southern parts of Mozambique, and review local, regional and global strategy by civil society in opposition to the model. They will produce a document outlining a campaign plan to be used in achieving a changed timber plantations model, with reduced impacts on water, soil and biodiversity resources. This effort will lead to an initiative to convert government owned timber plantations to multi use ecological forestry with water and soil conservation benefits. The project will assist the organization to formally engage with the relevant authorities, Civil Society and industry role-players to find solutions to the escalating water / biodiversity / sustainability crisis.
