Mobilizing against mining expansion
Central de Rondas Campesinas de la Microcuenca Inkas Vivientes (CEROCMIV) is organizing a coordinated effort to protect communities in three districts in Peru (Urubamba, La Convencion, and Calca) against mining concessions. Two mining companies aim to expand their projects without consulting the local community. The mining projects will disproportionately impact Indigenous Peoples in the area and harm three valleys and rivers. The mining companies’ expansion threatens the health of the communities’ livelihoods since the local economy is dependent on tourism to the local biodiversity and local textiles. CEROCMIV supports an internship in regions suffering from violence and mining pollution, conducts educational workshops to exchange ideas and tactics to stop the mining, and covers the legal fees to help the community understand their environmental rights and potential legal recourse.
